OUR HIV EXPERTS

Building on more than twenty years of providing primary and specialty care to people living with HIV, Dr. Meg Sullivan is a board-certified Infectious Disease specialist who brings dedication and a wealth of HIV experience to her role as Regional Medical Director at ViiV Healthcare. Having held multiple roles in academia, clinical practice, research, and administrative leadership, Meg’s diverse expertise provides deep insight into the needs of people living with HIV. She holds a particular interest in the reproductive health of HIV-affected individuals, has developed HIV patient engagement and retention models, and is excited to expand her reach aligned with ViiV’s mission to address the needs of the HIV community through new HIV medicines and a holistic approach.
 

Current Role

Meg joined ViiV in late 2020 as Regional Medical Director in the Northeast. Her role includes providing medical education to the HIV/Infectious Disease medical communities, discussing ViiV products and other topics of interest to ViiV. She also gathers relevant medical insights to help improve HIV care. Interacting with HIV/Infectious Disease healthcare providers, academic institutions, patient advocacy groups, and people living with HIV, Meg also supports her ViiV Medical Affairs colleagues. Concurrent with her work at ViiV, Meg continues to practice clinical medicine, providing HIV consultations at Mattapan Community Health Center in Boston, Massachusetts.

Experience

In her most recent position before joining ViiV, Meg was Deputy Editor of the clinical decision support resource UpToDate at Wolters Kluwer in Waltham, Massachusetts. She also was on faculty for over twenty years through 2018 as Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Boston University School of Medicine. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she provided primary and specialty HIV care at Boston Medical Center in numerous roles including Attending Physician at the Center for Infectious Disease and Project TRUST HIV Clinic, Physician Coordinator of the Inpatient HIV Liaison Service and the Inpatient HIV Counseling and Testing Service, HIV Consultant in the High Risk Obstetrical Clinic (Positive HOPE), and Attending Physician in the Medicine Ward as well as for the Infectious Disease Consultation Service. Over time, Meg has held many leadership roles—she served at Boston Medical Center as Director of HIV Clinical Programs for four years through 2018, and held appointments as Medical Director of the Center for Infectious Diseases, Medical Director of Positive HOPE Clinic, and Firm Chief of the Department of Medicine. She also was Associate Program Director for the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program and has served in national leadership roles with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and U.S. Public Health Service. While directing HIV clinic activities, Meg developed models for successful engagement and retention of HIV positive patients into ongoing medical care. In research activities, she led as site Principal Investigator of several studies funded by the CDC, U.S. Health Resources & Services Administration, and National Institutes of Health, in collaboration with the Boston University School of Public Health. In addition, Meg’s interest in the reproductive health of HIV-affected patients led to over twenty years of work including investigating methods to reduce HIV transmission risk in serodiscordant couples desiring conception. As Principal Investigator of the ARTEMIS (Assisted Reproduction Treatment and Education Models in Serodiscordants) study, she investigated sperm wash in HIV-infected males with subsequent intrauterine insemination in their HIV negative female partners, and also studied the use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for conception in serodiscordant couples.
 

Education

Meg received her MD from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in Maywood, Illinois in 1989. She completed her internship and residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. Meg also holds a BA in English from the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Indiana.
 

Personal Interests

Meg lives outside of Boston with her three children, two golden doodles, and a Maine Coon cat. She enjoys hiking, indoor cycling, skiing, and cooking.
