Ben also has provided medical consulting and editing in a variety of roles, including as a member of the World Health Organization HIV Clinical Guidelines Development Group from 2015 to 2018.

Ben received his MD in 1992 from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, and his PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 1990, working in the laboratory of Nobel laureate Thomas Cech at the University of Colorado in Boulder.
