Dr. Bruce Gilliam joined ViiV Healthcare in 2017 with extensive experience in patient care, research, medical education and training in HIV and other infectious diseases. His interest in HIV developed during his medical internship where he saw patients with many different opportunistic infections and limited treatment options. Since that time his passion has been in the care and treatment of HIV-infected patients as well as research to develop novel treatment strategies and prevention strategies.
 

Current Role

In his ViiV role as Eastern Regional Medical Director, Dr Gilliam works to provide his clinical expertise and perspective for projects and programs within ViiV as well as outside of ViiV. He networks with providers to discuss key issues in HIV and facilitate new research ideas. In addition, he plays a significant role in the development of educational materials and programs for not only ViiV personnel but also providers throughout the country. Bruce continues to teach and care for HIV patients as Volunteer Faculty at the University of Maryland Medical Center and University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus Center of Infectious Diseases in Baltimore.

Experience

Following his fellowship, Bruce joined the Henry M. Jackson Foundation where he conducted HIV vaccine trials for the US Military HIV Research Program. He subsequently joined the Institute of Human Virology (IHV) at the University of Maryland where he has been an active faculty member for over 16 years and served as the Associate Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Maryland Medical Center, Chief of Infectious Diseases at the University of Maryland Medical Center-Midtown Campus, Director of the IHV Clinical Program at the University of Maryland Medical Center-Midtown Campus, Medical Director of the IHV Center for Infectious Diseases, Clinical Director of the IHV AIDS Education and Training Center site, and Director of the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program. He was active in the IHV’s international HIV program in China, Guyana, Haiti, Nigeria, Rwanda and Zambia. In collaboration with the Guyana Ministry of Health and National AIDS Programme Secretariat, the University of Guyana, Georgetown Public Hospital, and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, he helped to develop an Internal Medicine/Infectious Diseases Residency Training Program at the Georgetown Public Hospital in Georgetown, Guyana. This program was designed to provide rigorous training in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases to young Guyanese physicians on-site in Guyana to prepare them to address medical issues confronting patients and physicians in Guyana and to provide medical leadership in education, public health and education for their country.
 

Education

Bruce earned his MD in 1990 from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, and completed an Internal Medicine Residency in 1993 at University of California, Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, and an Infectious Diseases Fellowship in 1996 at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He holds a MS in Pharmaceutical Sciences from University of Arizona School of Pharmacy in Tucson, and completed an AB (Bachelor of Arts) from Occidental College in Los Angeles.
 

Personal Interests

Bruce lives near Baltimore in Catonsville, Maryland with his wife, two daughters, and two Doberman Pinschers. Originally from California, he has had a lifelong interest in the art, culture, and history of the Southwest. He also enjoys travel, museums and ancient history.
